Some amazing shots of the partial Eclipse recently, snapped by Joanne Furton in Menominee. She said she captured these shots between the clouds, using a solar filter over the camera and eyes. Joanne also mentioned that there are two sunspot groups visible on the surface of the sun in these photos. I’m guessing those are the two small dots visible in the first and last photo and one spot in the second photo perhaps? Here in Lake Linden, it was cloudy and we just had a little darkening, but couldn’t see anything happening due to the cloud cover, so it’s nice to see photos like these from another part of the U.P. that wasn’t all clouded over.
906 Images shares a quick little video of the Eclipse from Marquette. He said it wasn’t total totality, but it was still pretty neat. I definitely agree!

Was too cloudy here to see much, but did catch a glimpse at totality.

Too cloudy here too. My friend in the Keweenaw was looking out her window, and it got like "tornado color" outside, THEN she remembered it was Eclipse time. I got an email from another buddy who was someplace in Totality. Sounds phenomenal!!
Great pics and Vid...and I agree Mary..I think it's the dots too!

With all the cloud cover that we had, it sure was nice to see pictures from others. These are great!

What is it like to experience a Total Solar Eclipse?
My main focus was on the very specific lighting effects of the 360 degree horizon where there is the appearance of a sunset in every direction. It was actually a bit darker since the camera automatically adjusted.
I was fortunate to be able to travel about 6 hours south to southern Illinois & Indiana to experience and capture the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse at Vincennes, IN (right on Hwy US-41). It's located right on the center line of totality & lasted 4:05 minutes. Totality begins at about the 1:00 minute mark.
The camera was located on the Lincoln Memorial bridge across the Wabash River on the Illinois side. The camera is looking southeast into George Rogers Clark National Historic Park.
My IPhone could not focus properly on the totality corona. There was a large, vocal group of people gathered in the park and surrounding area. In the corona view, there is a drone (blinking red and green) located at 8 o'clock and Venus is visible at 5 o'clock.

D.A. that is an awesome vid and wow..did you have a stunning place to view the whole thing!
Just a reminder to our cig smoking friends..there's a weather alert about the entire U.P. being under wildfire alerts...PLEASE don't throw any lit cigs out the car windows...Thank you.

Donna,
It was a real thrill! The bridge was the highest spot I could find & it worked well (except every time a vehicle passed by, the camera vibrated.) All the videos I've seen are of the Sun and Moon. I haven't seen any others that focus on this very eerie effect.

Thanks Joanne for these great shots and pointing out the sunspots. I think the experts were saying that indicates a good year for the Northern Lights. And thanks DA for the vid! We were at 99% and your shots show how different a total eclipse is! Thought it was cool to hear the reaction of the people at the park - a once in a lifetime event for most.

I guess everyone has their life affected in unique ways by the Sun, beyond of course life itself.
You folks in the North get treated to repeated displays of the Northern Lights and of course longer, harsher Winters. The next year or so should be great for the Lights.
Further South than the Midwest, folks receive longer and in some places endless Summers.
Here in the heart of the Midwest we get average Winters and average Summers and of course all those tornado spawning thunderstorms. Thanks Sol.
I'll take the very occasional sight of a total eclipse when & where I can chase after it.

Speaking of The Northern Lights... Here's the view tonight from the top of the ridge on Isle Royale.

I was just looking at the Bridge Cam page and you can clearly see the Northern Lights on the Sunset Bay cam
