Fred Koski took advantage of the snow still on the ground, to do a bit of “light painting”, creating unique photos of the technique for lighting UP the night. He’s done it previously, setting steel wool on fire and putting it inside a whisk, spinning it around during a long exposure, but this time he just tied a half piece of steel wool to a rope set it on fire and spun it around. His shutter speed was three seconds and he did it just after sunset. As you can see, it does set off quite a few sparks, thus the need to do it when there’s still snow on the ground which helps prevent a fire starting from the sparks. Such a unique way to light UP the night skies here UP North. I bet his neighbors enjoyed the show, too!
I know we’ve talked about the North Country Trail on these pages before, but I didn’t know the signs for the trail are called Blue Blazes. Check out this video short from MI Playground as he talks about the Blue Blazes and the North Country Trail.

It's amazing that the steel wool burns like that - i'm probably the only one who didn't know that! But Fred kicks it up a notch with inventive ways to photograph it! The way the sparks form an umbrella and then land on the snow. Very cool!!
