Fred Koski went out in the frosty morning recently, to capture the Hoar Frost that settled on the fences and trees around where he lives. Great shots, showing up close and personal what the frost looks like.

These photos got me wondering a few things about Hoarfrost or is it Hoar Frost? I found it listed both ways. Which then got me wondering why it is called Hoar Frost to begin with and I found this online: The word ‘hoar’ comes from old English and refers to the old age appearance of the frost, the way the ice crystals form makes it look like white hair or a beard. Anyway, by definition, Hoar Frost is a grayish-white crystalline deposit of frozen water vapor fromed in clear still weather on vegetation, fences, etc. So there you go, everything you wanted to know about hoar frost, but didn’t ask.

We join Chuck, the Restless Viking for a mysterious aircraft disappearance back in 1959. It disappeared in Lake Huron, on it’s way to Kinchiloe Air Force Base in the U.P., when Master Sergeant William Wyman and the plane he was flying went missing. He survived the plane crash, left a note and then disappeared. A sad and crazy story.

Great pictures Fred! The first is my favorite with the pattern of the fence.

The story of Master Sergeant William Wyman is a sad one! I think i first heard of it thru GLLKA. I couldn't find confirmation but i think after this incident they started leaving provisions in the offshore lighthouses. How sad the Coast Guard didn't check out the SOS he sent! It was a blessing that his family at least found out most of the story - all but the tragic end. He had tough decisions to make. Restless Viking is a great channel!

Mother Nature, beautiful, mysterious, fascinating.

Very cool pictures. And I'm with
jbuck in that the first is my
favorite. All very nice. And I'd
never heard of hoar frost I don't
think. Thanks for the explanation.

Way cool pics. The only time it's better is if the
sun is out...and you've got to get them pictures
fast, before it melts. They are just fabulous.

I LOVE Restless Viking's videos...the history is
phenomenal..he must have been a history teacher??
He sure knows his stuff.

Jbuck, I also heard it from the GLLKA, while on a
lighthouse cruise. I also remember tour guide saying
the part about leaving supplies after that.

Thank you Kathyrn!

Makes you wonder if there had been food there if he would have waited. So many tragic 'what ifs' in that story.
