Recently on the shores of Lake Superior out at Big Traverse, an interesting ice formation had Willow, Tom Bouwkamp’s four-legged friend quite fascinated. Ice balls formed and kept rolling in and out with the waves. Willow couldn’t figure out what they were or why they were moving like that and where did they come from? Tom and Barb (who provided the info for Tom’s photos here today), did say that Willow even tried to go after one, but was unsuccessful in capturing those large frozen balls of ice.

We’re quite fortunate to have so many photographers that share their photos with us like they do. For those that are interested, Visit Keweenaw invites you to dust off your camera or open your smartphone and get outside to capture spring! Waterfalls are rushing, hiking paths are thawing and Lake Superior’s shores are clearing up! For information about the photo contest, click here: Visit Keweenaw Spring Photo Contest Photos must be submitted by midnight on Friday, April 5th.

Alexis Dahl gives us a history lesson on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge today. She says: “If you’ve ever been to Houghton or Hancock, Michigan, you’ve seen (and likely driven over) this bridge. What you might not know is that building the Portage Lake Bridge required some serious feats of engineering, from floating a structure twice as long as a whale into a tiny gap, to sending workers into a pit full of high-pressure air. Here's the story I wish I knew the first time I saw this bridge. (If you’re wondering: They did let me go inside the control room! For security reasons, though, no footage was allowed.)”

Alexis gives special thanks to the Michigan Tech Department of Social Sciences and the Keweenaw Time Traveler for supporting this video! Additional thanks to MDOT for permission to use their historical and drone footage, and for giving me a tour of the bridge, and to Dr. Theresa Ahlborn for reviewing this video's outline for accuracy.

Wow, what a great set and well worth the wait!
I like the name of the first pic;
“Willow and the Ice Balls”.
Sounds like a great name for a movie.
And another interesting video from
Alex-is. Her personality says it all.

Those ice balls are amazing. Can
you imagine if that dog was able
to grab them? Cool pictures.

Love anything on the bridge.

Aren't "Ice Balls" a sign of Spring?

Easily the best Lift Bridge video I've seen.
