The debate seems to always continue... is it Houghton Douglass Falls or Douglass Houghton Falls? Either way, the falls was originally named for Douglass Houghton and his cousin C.C. Douglass and is still in the process of becoming a State Park, dedicated to Veterans, especially the Vietnam Veterans.
Judy Byykkonen and her four-legged “girls” recently made the hike from Lake Linden to below the falls. She said with the low amount of snow we’ve received this winter, snowshoes were not necessary, but she did say that the initial trek down into the gully from the railroad bed was quite steep, much steeper than that first photo shows. Still, though, Judy said it was a fun winter adventure and how rewarding after that hike, to see the water flowing out from behind all the ice formations at the top.
It is said that this 110 foot high falls, is the tallest waterfall in Michigan. There’s an interesting podcast from Stateside - Michigan Public NPR in 2017, which features John Pepin from the Michigan Natural Resources, talking about whether it’s the tallest falls. You can access that 7 minute podcast on the following link...when you get to the page, click on the black “LISTEN” button: What’s the Tallest Waterfall in Michigan?
Judy also made a short video of the water rushing over the top of the falls from behind all the ice accumulated at the very top. Make sure your volume is turned UP, so you can hear the roar of the falls!
