The debate seems to always continue... is it Houghton Douglass Falls or Douglass Houghton Falls? Either way, the falls was originally named for Douglass Houghton and his cousin C.C. Douglass and is still in the process of becoming a State Park, dedicated to Veterans, especially the Vietnam Veterans.

Judy Byykkonen and her four-legged “girls” recently made the hike from Lake Linden to below the falls. She said with the low amount of snow we’ve received this winter, snowshoes were not necessary, but she did say that the initial trek down into the gully from the railroad bed was quite steep, much steeper than that first photo shows. Still, though, Judy said it was a fun winter adventure and how rewarding after that hike, to see the water flowing out from behind all the ice formations at the top.

It is said that this 110 foot high falls, is the tallest waterfall in Michigan. There’s an interesting podcast from Stateside - Michigan Public NPR in 2017, which features John Pepin from the Michigan Natural Resources, talking about whether it’s the tallest falls. You can access that 7 minute podcast on the following link...when you get to the page, click on the black “LISTEN” button: What’s the Tallest Waterfall in Michigan?

Judy also made a short video of the water rushing over the top of the falls from behind all the ice accumulated at the very top. Make sure your volume is turned UP, so you can hear the roar of the falls!

GREAT pics. When so much younger, a pack of us traveling Hamel creek up to the falls, crawled up and came down Calumet hill. Now, I know that has two names, Lake Linden Hill or Calumet Hill. I have never heard Douglas Houghton falls....always Houghton Douglas Falls. Weird.

I've always known it as "Douglas Houghton", not the other way around.

There has always been a long standing debate whether Douglas Houghton or Bridalveil Falls in Pictured Rocks was the tallest. Height-wise, Bridalveil is taller (140 feet vs 110 feet). However, by summer Bridalveil is usually just a trickle of water whereas DH is still going strong; this could be why DH is considered the tallest because it's a "full-time" waterfall? The other neat thing about DH is that the Keweenaw Fault passes through the Falls and is one of the few places in the Peninsula where one can see it. I probably should have added it to the book, but had to be mindful of safety.

I saw these pictures by Judy and asked if I could go with her next time. Then she told me what all was involved, because she doesn't park next to the entrance to the falls. She parks by the trestle on the "Calumet Hill" and walks the creek up. She then told me all she goes through to get there.
Um, maybe in the summer. She also explained that it's called Houghton-Douglas because it's named after both people. Makes sense to me. I used to always call it Houghton Douglas but then was told it was Douglas Houghton. So thanks to Judy, I now know. Great pictures, Judy.

Deb…that’s what I was thinking that one would have to be sure-footed walking on that trail in the winter.
And I’m trying to imagine 110’ high falls which is the height of a 11 story building. I thought that Tahquamenon Falls would
be the highest, but they’re not even half that at 48’.

Hi
But, Tahquamenon Falls has a brewpub! Seriously, maybe Tahquamenon Fall has more water flowing over it, and it looks to be wider.

I have not visited many of the waterfalls featured on the Pastycam. I'll have to try to do that before I get too old & creaky (I'm only slightly creaky).

Kathryn and Alex, Houghton Douglas is not wide at all, while Tahquamenon is little Niagara. As a kid we walked up to Houghton Douglas all the time. We'd pack a picnic lunch and spend the day. Oh the fun we had as a kid growing up in the Copper Country. And Judy just continues to do all of those things. Good for her.

By agreeing to name it "Houghton - Douglass", Douglass Houghton got first billing. Think about that for a bit. It's great to see the place is really getting back to public access.

Capt Paul,
I finally got "Michigan Rocks". It's been very interesting and of course quite informative.
