Last weekend’s storm really dumped a bunch of snow on the folks in Ishpeming. Laurie Bashaw and her hubby, Edward Korpi share some photos with us of the snow around their home. The wind blew all the snow around and made some good size drifts...one in front of their house was just short of 29” and the big one you can see on their deck was just short of 39”. You can see the yardstick measurements in Laurie’s fourth photo. And to think a couple days before this storm there was just a small amount covering the ground, maybe a couple inches. The bottom two photos were taken by Edward. That’s the snow drift on their deck and then a shot of the deck with no snow, so you can get a better idea of how much snow there really is there. It looks like winter was just waiting in the background to dump all we normally get for December and January in one big swoop.

Then to top it all off, Laurie said her snowblower quit on her when she stopped to get dry mittens. They figured it was out of gas, so they filled it up and checked the oil (which they had also done before they started earlier) and their oil dip stick was broken off. Yikes...so off to the repair shop it had to go. Laurie was thankful that Edward has a tractor snowblower or they would have been in a pickle to remove all that snow.

Since winter has definitely arrived I thought it would be a good time to check out the science of snowflakes with Professor Brian Cox from The Royal Society. We’ll take a deep dive into the wonderful world of snowflakes. Seems appropriate with the current weather.

Nice set and the deck in the summertime looks so warm and inviting. Nice backyard too.
An interesting video and I hope you were paying attention, there will be a test later.

I recognized these pictures immediately as Laurie and Ed's place. They sure got nailed. Forgot to ask her if she got her machine back yet because it hasn't stopped snowing since.

WOW! WOW, WOW, WOW!

I live on the backside of the building here, where it doesn't get quite as much snow as on the front, but I got a drift on my balcony! That's nuts.

The sun is coming out....beautiful thing to see, after soooooooooooooo long of just drab.

Snowflakes...amazing things, eh!

All that worrying about a light December?

I just checked the Keweenaw County Snowfall website. As of yesterday, the 2023/24 season is now only 27.5 inches behind last season. Plenty of time to catch up.

And where do you get a 48 inch wooden "yard" stick?

Hopefully the remainder of more "bountiful" snowfalls to come will help to reduce the tourism losses seen in December.

Donna,

Those last 12 days must be the prequel or setup to Groundhog Day happening just 2 days later.

Let's go!

The area lost MILLIONS of dollars during the snow
less days. Finally, they can pull in the bucks. I
worked out in the Harbor in 1979-1980, it snowed 44
days in a row. I thought we were being buried
alive. The business owners were in a pack, thanking
the Snow Gods for all the "White Gold"....this is
huge money for a lot of folks. (Not me....but a
lot!)
