We have a duo of photographers capturing a storm that blew through the Keweenaw recently, starting with an amazing capture of lightning piercing a cloud over Lake Superior. That’s the striking (pun intended) handiwork of Copper Harbor based photographer, Steve Brimm. Just look at all those lightning bolts surging across the sky, quite spectacular indeed!
The next two photographs were snapped by Isaac Diener with the first of the two at Houghton Breakers. Interesting that the lightning bolt on the left is so bright and the one on the right not as bright and seems to have a “poof” of something on the end or beginning of it. Then Isaac’s second shot shows a bolt of lightning shooting down somewhere in Hancock. So much energy in storms like this, fascinating, yet scary at the same time.
Steve Brimm also recorded a video near the Isle Royale Queen IV dock, with the waves crashing through the opening between Hunter’s Point and Porter’s Island in Copper Harbor during that storm. There were already gale force winds with 10 foot waves and the crew of the Queen said 13 footers were predicted for the following day, so no trip to Isle Royale that day.

Simply stunning. I have tried through the years to get a pic of lightening...NOPE...just can't get it.
When do they close Isle Royale for the winter?
Answer: Isle Royale National Park is the only national park to completely close for the winter season each year. Guests can visit this national park from April 16 to October 31 each year. The park closes from November 1 to April 15 for extreme winter weather and to keep visitors safe.

There are many new proposed changes in the works for Isle Royale. One of them is to allow winter camping. I'm not sure how the transportation systems would handle this.

Well...they do use a plane to land on ice out on the Island....I wonder if that's part of the plan? Otherwise..holy wha. Imagine a blizzard out there.
