Tom Bouwkamp was out walking the beach at Big Traverse with his dog, Willow, when he came upon an unusual mode of transportation on the beach there. He said Willow had never seen a seaplane before so lots of barking occurred, trying to figure out what they were I suppose. From what I can gather with the comments and such, these folks that pilot the seaplanes had just stopped in for a visit with one of Tom’s neighbors out at Big Traverse. How fun, when they want to ‘take a ride’, they hop in their plane and fly off to their destination. If you recall I mentioned yesterday that the seaplane in the photo flying over the Bete Grise irons would be in today’s photos, too. So they go joyriding whenever the weather is good!

Since we’re flying over and landing on Lake Superior, I thought this would be a good time to find out what TVO Today says makes Lake Superior so Superior! The lead-in to their video says: “We asked, you told us. After tallying more than 4,000 votes, the title of Greatest Lake of the Great Lakes belongs to Lake Superior. TVO field reporter Jeyan Jeganathan shares 10 facts you probably didn't know about the Greatest Lake of All Time.”

Very cool. The Bete Grise plane flew over us
at Calumet Waterworks yesterday also, as did
the white one. The water was so calm that I
saw more boats out there than ever before.
And the water was very clear, due to no
wind, I'm sure, and very refreshing. Lots of
people in the lake enjoying the break from
the heat. We'll go back today and as long as
the weather cooperates.

Nice video of the GLOAT!!

Interesting pix!
It looks like a migration and this is where they came to spawn.

Those pilots must have put a whole lot of trust in the weather forecast that day.

At the end of the video the speaker states "Bring a life jacket". While I heartily recommend a personal flotation device for everyone whenever they are on any water it reminded me of a true story that happened on the Ranger III, the Isle Royale National Park ferry.

This was back on the 1970's during the safety talk that was being given during the beginning of our cruise. A women was talking loudly in the back of the crowd. The speaker stopped talking and asked the women if she had a question. She responded with something to the effect of, "Well I understand that the water is so cold that we will fairly quickly die from exposure, so why bother putting on a life jacket?".

The Ranger quickly answered her by saying, "Well, it makes it a whole lot easier to find the bodies."
