The Strawberry Moon appeared the first week of June and Barbara Bouwkamp shares the photos she captured of this full moon rising over Lake Superior. She was reading and noticed a glow outside her beach house, so she put down her book to see this. Grabbing her phone she went outside to capture these shots. Barbara said the first three photos were with a three second mode and the bottom photo was with the one second mode and would be what we actually see with the naked eye.
The full moon in June is the last full moon of spring or the first full moon of summer. The popular nickname, Strawberry moon comes from the Algonquin tribes, so named to mark the peak of ripening strawberries in the northeastern United States. Interesting indeed, especially since here in the Keweenaw, strawberries peak ripening time is closer to the fourth of July.
We’re heading further north to Copper Harbor with Visit Keweenaw to check out the Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary. If you’ve never been there and are able to hike there are two connected loop trails, the one mile Cathedral Grove loop and the 1.2 mile Bertha Daubendiek trail. It’s a beautiful area with hundreds of 300 to 500 year-old white pines that measure from 3 to 5 feet in diameter and is one of the last old-growth white pine stands in Michigan. This year marks the 50th anniversary since these amazing trees were saved with the purchase of the property by the Michigan Nature Association.

Beautiful pics! I knew where and who took them soon as I saw the first pic, nice Barb! Can't wait to see that moon from a very similar location when we're in Gay.
