Thanks to Judy Byykkonen we have some photos of the 280 foot American Queen Voyages cruise ship, Ocean Navigator as it makes its way along the Portage Canal and under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. This is the first of two visits the ship will make to the Houghton waterfront this summer and this was the seventh day of the 16 day cruise the ship is on. The passengers and crew were met with representatives from the city of Houghton, Visit Keweenaw and the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and then were able to enjoy the Houghton waterfront and explore the city. They also had the opportunity to visit Quincy Mine, the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum and the Carnegie Museum of the Keweenaw. They had until 5:00 p.m. to explore and then the ship was heading out for their next stop in Duluth.

Judy also recorded a video so we can feel like we’re right there watching it go under the Bridge. It’s always pretty exciting around these parts when a big ship arrives in the Canal.
