Brunette Park is a hidden gem along the Gay/Lac La Belle Road. It’s a great place to have a picnic if the bugs aren’t bothersome that day and the swimming is great as the water is shallow for quite a way out into Lake Superior. Keweenaw County provides picnic tables, a few pedestal grills and outhouses, so there’s nothing fancy, but all you need to get away from the heat in town. Barbara Bouwkamp was out there recently to give us a look at the beach and the rocks that have accumulated on the north end of the beach. Interesting sandstone specimens, among the array. We’ve enjoyed a number of picnics there through the years. It’s a popular spot when the temperature soars, but you have to get there early to grab a spot with a picnic table, as there aren’t that many being just a small roadside park.

Fantastic pics & video!! A favorite spot of ours for
many years, we go there quite often. Once Vic puts
her chair in the water and starts reading or if
she's hunting for interesting rocks..... well, Finn
and I can't get her to leave! lol We'll be there
several times again this summer for sure!! Looking
forward to it.

Also, like Mary says, somedays the bugs aren't bad,
other days if they are..... they'll try and carry
you away! :-)

I love that park, always have. We'll get
there. It's a great spot for sticking your
feet in the water and reading a book. A
picnic is OK too.

I'd be picking those "foot" shaped rocks, grab 5
little stones and make a foot....glue them
together...that's fun stuff!!

When I saw the video, my first thought was "Is she
NUTS to put her feet in that ice cold water?" I
was up north Memorial Day weekend and the TV
weatherman said Lake Superior water temperatures
ranged from 39 to 44F. But if the video was taken
last year, maybe the water had warmed up to
something more bearable.

Personally, I like to swim where it gets deep
enough to swim fairly quickly, instead of being
shallow for quite a ways. Though, speaking of
water temperature, shallow water does warm up
better.

Kathy, there are areas that you can step off the
shelf of sandstone where it will get deep fairly
quickly. Whenever we're there, I always have my 3 in
1 bodywash (because the plastic bottle floats) and
enjoy the best bathtub in the world!! Really
invigorating!! Good test to see how the ol ticker is
working as well! lol
