The United States Coast Guard Cutter Spar was in the Keweenaw this past week entering the Portage Waterway at the South Entry. Courtney Holzberger was at White City to capture a few photos of the Spar as it went by. She wasn’t sure why it was in town and between us we speculated that it could be on a buoy tending mission or Courtney said it had come from Lake Huron and could be just sailing the Keweenaw Waterway as a shortcut on its way back to home port in Duluth. Either way, it’s always fun to see these boats close-up on the Portage.
Jeff Dennis shares a video from earlier in May out at White City with Lake Superior stirred up and wavy. Jeff also mentioned that he followed the Spar on the day Courtney took the above photos, starting at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge and it moved along without stopping. He said he was told by a friend, that the Spar sailed straight on to Duluth. So I guess the shortcut was the reason the USCG Cutter Spar was in town.
Keep voting for Lake Superior as the Best Lake in all three categories.
Vote for the best lake in the U.S. once per day until polls close on Monday, June 5 at noon ET. No matter the outcome, we want to do our Big Lake proud.

OK, i can see why there are so many people who don't want to swim in the cool waters of Superior, HOWEVER, we should be #1 in the other 2 categories!
Sorry to read about the fire in Lake Linden a couple days ago. And sorry for the people who lost their home while they were on vacation.
