The third Saturday in May is designated as Armed Forces Day, when we honor the men and women currently serving in all branches of the Armed Forces. Donna MacIntosh snapped this flag photo, which I thought was quite appropriate to say thank you to all those serving our country at this time (especially my son), for their service and for our freedom!

Then Cathy McKenzie and friends take us to the Hungarian Falls in Tamarack City. The falls are quite beautiful this time of year, with the water flowing over the 50 foot drop here in the middle falls. The view (in the bottom photo) from the middle falls toward Torch Lake is a beauty, too. Dover Creek is home to a series of three falls in this area, the upper, the middle and the lower falls. The upper and the lower have around a 15-20 foot drop, so the middle falls that Cathy took us to here today is the biggest of the three. Spring is the time of year to visit if you want to hear the roar and see the abundant water flowing, as often times in the summer the falls can be nearly dry.

Cathy made a video so we can get the full effect of the Hungarian middle falls, complete with the sounds of all that water rushing over the top. Once again, check the volume on your speakers!

So here is where to vote daily for Lake Superior:

Best Lake
Best Lake for Swimming
Best Lake for Water Sports.

You can vote and do a fun little "I'm not a robot"
puzzle for free! Vote for the best lake in the
U.S. once per day until polls close on Monday,
June 5 at noon ET. No matter the outcome, we want
to do our Big Lake proud.

Beautiful pictures. I believe I have some
just like this. I know I have the one with
the shot of Torch Lake. Beautiful.

Lake Superior is still #3.

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, May 20, 2023 - 09:44 am:

Those are stunning. Beautiful falls...spent many
times walking that thing.

Yeah, what's up with the 3rd place? Voted today!

Awesome pix and a great video! I would not want to fall into those

rapids although I might try a boogie board…NOT!

By D. A. (Midwested) on Saturday, May 20, 2023 - 07:11 pm:

Very impressive. Hungarian Falls is presently much more powerful than it's usual dribble (by comparison).

I recently stumbled onto this very impressive water fall in British Columbia. But it's frozen water. This avalanche drone video it the most impressive thing I've seen in quite awhile.

Question- When coming down the hill from Laurium to
Lake Linden... what is that gorge called off to the
left? Been years since I have been there, is that
also a waterfall I don't recall? Thx

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, May 20, 2023 - 09:45 pm:

U.C., are you talking about the Douglas
Houghton Falls?

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 02:58 am:

Great Avalanche video!

By George L. (Yooperinct) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 08:54 am:

UC I'm not sure about the gorge but I recall two things about that area going downhill toward LL -- there was a drive-in restaurant (an A&W?) on the right, and somewhere on the left side and down the hill there was an open mine shaft that I and a couple buddies ventured into. This was over 50 years ago.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 09:12 am:

George, I don't remember the A & W. I do
remember there being a place to get ice
cream cones at the top of the hill. I really
missed that place.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 09:46 am:

Sweet video, D.A.! I’m amazed at the length time that it can stay

aloft. Thanks for sharing!

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:32 am:

That was the Totempole Restaurant, owned by Art and
Gloria Hamel, who also owned the Lake Linden Drive
In....waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day. I worked at
both places. The Totempole was just fun....

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:37 am:

Donna, that was on the left going up the
hill. I'm talking about the little stand at
the top of the hill kind of across from
those cabins.

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:42 am:

That video is FANTASTIC DA! WOW! I love drone
vids..this one is spectacular!

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 11:46 am:

I know where you mean, and I don't recall the name,
but me and my Grandparents would eat there a lot.
They had AWESOME food and ice cream!

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 03:17 pm:

OK Deb...asked a friend...it's the old Dairy Kreme!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 03:19 pm:

Yes. That was it! Thanks, Donna.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 08:28 pm:

Can the public still get back to the Douglas
Houghton Falls or is that now private property?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 21, 2023 - 10:20 pm:

U C. you can get back there.
