Laurie Bashaw and her husband, Ed made the trek in to visit the O Kun de Kun Falls on the Baltimore River, 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing in Ontonagon County. Laurie said it had been on their winter to-do list for a while, so they were excited to go on this adventure. She described the walk in as a bit much and tiring with uneven snow pack, but they persevered. They brought snowshoes, Yak Trax and ice cleats, but the trail was so hard packed from the overnight cold, that they could walk without them. Laurie said if you stepped off the trail, though, you could easily sink to your knees. She also said it’s listed as a 1.3 mile hike each way, but both of them had over 10,000 steps on their FitBits, so they kind of questioned that 1.3 miles.

Laurie’s hubby, Ed Korpi recorded a video of the falls on the North Country Trail, which really opened my eyes. At first I thought the falls were completely frozen in the photos, but with Ed’s video, you can see the running water, flowing out from under those icy walls. If you turn up the volume, you’ll hear the water, too!

Very cool. The video surprised me as I didn't even
notice water in the pictures. Very nice.

Outstanding.

Well done…the video was a pleasant surprise as I too thought the

river was completely frozen in the pix.

Thanks for sharing!

I agree Alex. Where does all this liquid water come
from? Of course warming weather melting and runoff
aside, in the dead of winter there must be a lot of
aquafer fed underground springs feeding everything.
