We had quite an unusual bird at our feeders over the weekend. It was with a flock of Evening Grosbeaks, but stood out from the others with it’s bright yellow feathers. I grabbed my camera, put my largest lens on and started snapping away, trying to capture it without too many branches in the way. The second photo is for comparison with what an Evening Grosbeak normally looks like.

From what I could find on the Internet, it's an Xanthochromic Male Evening Grosbeak. Xanthochromic is the term used to describe a bird that has yellow pigmented plumage where it should be some other color. It was such a bright yellow, we thought it looked like a canary, only bigger! It was exciting to see such a different bird!

Father and Son Fun share a video of Evening Grosbeaks visiting their homemade bird feeder. They’re feisty and sure don’t seem to want to share the sunflower seeds.

FOOTNOTE: In case you missed yesterday's photos from George C. Bailey, of the "break in the clouds" and In The Keweenaw's Bluebird Day at Mont Ripley video, just click here: Feb. 6th, to take a look at them!}

I love birds, and especially the ones I
don't see a lot. I love these. I like that
you got one of what they normally look like.
Thanks for sharuping these with us.

I just received these two photos in my Messenger, from Liz Siivola. She said her husband, Peter Vorhes snapped these shots of a leucistic Goldfinch while it was at their feeder yesterday. This is the second time this winter it's been in with a flock of goldfinches. Makes one wonder why there are so many critters with pigment issues lately.

Climate change. They gotta adapt, or leave!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 - 10:02 am:

Hi
With regard to different pigmentation, that's just a
genetic roll of the dice. Sometimes it benefits the
animal, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it makes
no difference. And, while it is possible for outside
influences to cause a mutation, you'd need evidence
to state that. Donna, if your remark about climate
change was just a joke, my apologies for coming out
all serious.
