Stacey Flood made a solo paddle in the Eagle Harbor area to check out the natural arch that is located there. Looks like she picked the perfect day, too, with calm Lake Superior waters. I’m not sure where she started out from or the exact location of the arch, but I do know that this is one of the only ways to get there to view it, as the property in front of it is private, so kayak, canoe or small boat are the only options. It’s located between Eagle Harbor and Agate Harbor, so I wonder if it’s closer to launch from Esrey Park or from Eagle Harbor to get there. What a neat adventure and one that I’d like to paddle to myself sometime.

Speaking of adventures, today we have an interview with Captain Joe Walters of the United States Geological Research Vessel Kiyi by Andrea Guerriero. She said the Kiyi was in Sault Ste. Marie for a few days to refuel and restock supplies and she asked if he would allow her to interview him. Very nice! I received a text from Uncle Chuck and he said to say

hello to everyone.

Hi, U.C. Maybe we'll get to see you while
you're here.

Anyway, I love these pictures. Unlike Mary,
though, I have no desire to paddle on Lake
Superior. She's too unpredictable and winds
can come up seemingly out of blue. So thanks
to Stacey for letting us see what she saw.

Hi
I wonder how much clearance there is under the arch,
particularly if the lake level rises.

I think I would be willing to paddle in calm
conditions. And I mean dead calm. On Lake Huron, it
doesn't go directly from calm to raging; the wind
increases more gradually. I'd assume Lake Superior
is similar.

Kathryn, I've been on it when it's come up
out of nowhere. Scariest moments.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 - 08:24 am:

Deb S, good to know. My vacation home is on Lake
Huron, south of Cheboygan, with Bois Blanc island
off-shore. I'm familiar with the weather patterns
there.

I am cautious about taking my kayak out; it is light
enough for me to carry (necessary) but not really
designed for waves.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 - 09:20 am:

If you could be in a bay, that'd be good. If
love to kayak out there but my respect for
they big lake outweighs my want, lol. It
only took once for me to know you never
know.
