When Marcy Bessolo Hermanson shared these photos, she commented that Long Lake Refuge is a hidden gem behind Eagle Harbor. I think she’s right, because it’s an area in Eagle Harbor Township that I had no idea was there. It’s actually the Eagle Harbor Township Conservation and Recreation Area and includes Eliza Lake Preserve, Long Lake Refuge and George Hite Dunes and Marshes. The ten miles of non-motorized trails there are great for hiking and biking this time of year and in the winter are groomed for excellent cross country skiing and snowshoeing.
To get there, follow US-41 North of Phoenix and turn West on the Eagle Harbor Road. When you reach Eagle Harbor, turn left onto Pine St., drive several blocks past 7th St. and the Pine Grove Cemetery to arrive at the trail head near Eliza Lake Park. Park along the street. Please note parts of this trail system cross private property so please be courteous.
We’ve had a few lightning storms in the Copper Country lately. Thanks to Taana Blom we get what looks like a symphony of lights from the lightning flashing in the sky and the flashing light of the Lower Entry Lighthouse. The sure sound that spring is here, the “peepers”, provide the background music. Turn UP your speakers to get the full effect!

I've never heard of that either. Will have
to check it out if my knee will hold up.
We love lightning storms. I hated them in
Minnesota because there always seemed to be
tornado watches and warnings with them. I
am going to enjoy the ones we experience
here. As long as lightning doesn't strike
anybody, that is.
