Tom Tikkanen was on hand earlier this week when the Calumet Village crew was busy clearing the snow from the streets after the storm we had. I don’t know exact counts, but I heard there was up to 16” of snow in some parts, I’m guessing Calumet probably had about that amount. Since there really isn’t anywhere to push the snow from the village streets, the local U.P. villages push it into a larger pile and then come with the Sno Go and dump trucks to removed that pile formed the full length of the streets. From there the dump trucks bring it somewhere nearby that is used to pile the snow throughout the winter. It’s quite a production and works pretty efficiently. It never ceases to amaze me when I have to go somewhere early in the morning after a storm, to see these huge piles of snow down the middle of the street, waiting for the Sno Go to blow it away.

Copper World in Calumet, has a video of the snow removal process from a couple years back, so you can see it in action. I never tire of watching this “dance” of the Sno Go and Dump trucks working together so well.

Lol, ask Dr Nat about this form of snow removal..... Her first winter morning in the Keweenaw, she almost hit one of the piles in the middle of 6th Street with her truck because I forgot to tell the city does this...... Oops! ;-)

While the UP is on the winter side of this storm, you have to feel for the folks in the four states that just got annihilated by the tornado that struct there last night. The images coming out of there are both sad and fascinating.

It's nice to live where they know how to
clean the snow. They didn't where we lived
in Minnesota. However, there's another side
of that. We wouldn't need people who know
how to clean the snow that well if it didn't
snow so darn much lol.

Cool pics/video, come February the city streets look like a whole different country or planet to me at times, lol.
I echo the words of Capt Paul for those affected by bad weather and tornado's. Sending prayers south for sure!!

I recall living in Lake Linden, having to go to
work early in the mornings. I'd go out to shovel
out the buggy at 4am...snow being up to the
windows...LL's crew would be out and I swear...you
couldn't get a teaspoon of snow when they got done.
They are amazing and quite talented at playing with
the big toys to clean up!

Give me snow anyday...compared to the devastation
the south is going through. It is beyond
heartbreaking. Prayers for the south!
