Tom Tikkanen was on hand earlier this week when the Calumet Village crew was busy clearing the snow from the streets after the storm we had. I don’t know exact counts, but I heard there was up to 16” of snow in some parts, I’m guessing Calumet probably had about that amount. Since there really isn’t anywhere to push the snow from the village streets, the local U.P. villages push it into a larger pile and then come with the Sno Go and dump trucks to removed that pile formed the full length of the streets. From there the dump trucks bring it somewhere nearby that is used to pile the snow throughout the winter. It’s quite a production and works pretty efficiently. It never ceases to amaze me when I have to go somewhere early in the morning after a storm, to see these huge piles of snow down the middle of the street, waiting for the Sno Go to blow it away. Lol, ask Dr Nat about this form of snow removal..... Her first winter morning in the Keweenaw, she almost hit one of the piles in the middle of 6th Street with her truck because I forgot to tell the city does this...... Oops! ;-) By Deb S.
