We join Walter Dennis and family, for a flight over Ontonagon at sunset. He captured some of the highlights around the town, including the two lighthouses there. The West Pierhead Light is at the end of the pier where the Ontonagon river flows into Lake Superior. A bit of trivia information for you, is that the Ontonagon river is the largest river to flow into Lake Superior’s south shore and the pier was built, because there was a bar across the mouth of the river there that prevented ships from using it as a harbor.
Walter also took a neat aerial shot of the Ontonagon Lighthouse, owned by the Ontonagon County Historical Society. You can stop in at their museum in town to book a tour of the Lighthouse or take a self-guided tour Tuesday thru Saturday. It’s an interesting little town, with the Porcupine Mountain State Park nearby and a township park for camping on the shores of Lake Superior.
The video takes you up and down the river with great views of both of the Lights, too. Walter is a pro, for sure!
