We’re touring with E. Neil Harri as his co-pilots today, over Lake Superior to check out the Bete Grise Beach and Mendota Canal in the first shot. The canal is a great place to kayak, too, with the water surrounded by land, it stays mostly calm in there.
Neil’s second two photos are the reefs around and between the Keweenaw Point and Manitou Island, including surrounding Gull Rock Lighthouse. You can see why it’s important to have lighthouses to warn boats where there are reefs that could damage their boats and ground them if they run up on them. There is so much just under Lake Superior’s surface that is hidden until you’re right up on it, unless you have the equipment to help you navigate around it all.
Just a note, that a day or two after Neil snapped these photos, the Keweenaw was a-wash with green as the leaves popped overnight and now the landscape is green again.
If you’re looking for a bit of serenity in the middle of the week here, Steve Brimm from Steve Brimm Photography has just what the Dr. ordered. Twenty seconds of a lovely spring day at Hunter’s Point in Copper Harbor.

When Manitou was a manned Coast Guard light (during the sailing season) it was considered pretty good duty, as some of the coasties were known to board their 14-ft aluminum and head to Copper Harbor for a little R&R. Definitely a no-no, but guess we can't blame them too much!
