Jeff and Walter Dennis and family were in the Ontonagon area recently with camera and drone in hand. The bridge over the Agate Falls on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River made for a perfect photo op and drone flyover. Not only do you get a look at the falls and the river, but we get a glimpse of the family on the adventure, too.

If you think the photos are outstanding, just wait until you click the play button on the video. Great views of the falls, the river, the bridge, the highway and wait for it...a fly-under. Walter is a natural flying the drone!

memories The trestle in 1950s was used by steam engines by the Duluth and South Shore and Atlantic railroad and later diesel electric powered engines. Not any near as impressive as the steam. fairly decent grade going west made the steam impressive.WE local kids used to clime the supports and who got the highest was the winner. If mothers caught us we were all looser and slightly sore.
I am surprised how much the falls has eroded in 70 or so years.
My uncle was a section hand for 30+ and during ww2 and guarded trestle with a 45 pistol

What great memories, ferdinand lundberg (Flundber)!!

Would love to see steam engines on that trestle - must have been spectacular! Did you ever get any pictures? And your Uncle guarding the trestle with a 45! There are a lot of stories about sabotage and stopping shipments was a priority - who knows? Maybe they were targeting the trestle!

So what has changed about the falls? Are they lower? Have they moved upstream?

To answer uncle bucks questions: early 50s cameras not ready available. This guard duty occurred in a UP winter. A 6x6 so called warming shack was built no heat source. Uncle was often "teased" about his dangerous guard duty his response not printable.
The falls has become stair stepped. Was more vertical and had load roar with mist. WE could sometimes hear the falls at home 3+ miles away on a clear UP night.
