Kitch-iti-kipi is located just west of Manistique at Palms Book State Park. Go 6 miles west of Manistique on US 2 to Thompson, take M-149 north for 12 miles to the park. One of the Upper Peninsula's major attractions, Kitch-iti-kipi or "The Big Spring" is two hundred feet across and forty feet deep. Over 10,000 gallons a minute gush from many fissures in underlying limestone, the flow continuing throughout the year at a constant 45 degree temperature so the spring never freezes and can be enjoyed any season of the year.
One correction has to be made to the above statements, though, where it says the “spring never freezes”. Never say never, as it did freeze this past March. According to Wood TV A DNR supervisor in the area explained when snowmelt flows into the spring and cools it, that allows ice to form.
With all that being said, it’s an absolutely beautiful place to visit and I think Chad Johnson chose the best time of year to do so, as there were no bugs and most likely less visitors so the raft was not overcrowded and there was no waiting to get on.
This video from Upper Limits Media gives us a different perspective of the Big Springs, with an underwater view of the lake trout, brown trout and brook trout, too numerous to count, as they swim by the camera.

Absolutely stunning video! Don't forget to full- screen it. The first time our family went UP north in the 60s, we went to The Big Spring and I went every year that I was UP there, when I was able to travel. It's worth the trip.

Tried to squeeze in a visit to that spring in our last (2013) U.P. trip when leaving Munising for Mackinac Island but just didn't have the time to spare. Alas, perhaps next time. And those are some dandy trout swimmin' around in there. Betcha fishin's not allowed, but for good reason.
