Fifty mph wind gusts last week, had at least five freighters taking shelter along the south shore of Lake Superior. Marcy Bessolo Hermanson did a bit of freighter chasing to capture these photos. First one is the “Big Paul”, who looks to be hugging in pretty close to the irons at Big Traverse. The second photo is the Ojibway sheltered at White City. In the third shot, the three freighters laying at anchor are at Bete Grise. I’m not sure which three these were, but the one closest is from the Canada Steamship Lines.
Marcy’s remaining photos show why these big boats were taking refuge in the harbors. Lake Superior was really stirred up with high wind gusts like we had. Those waves don’t look all that big from a distance, but when there are that many whitecaps on the Big Lake, you know she’s a wild one.
The Cedar Bay-UP Michigan Facebook page shared a video they titled “Springtime Waves”. The crashing wave action is great!
