E. Neil Harri is taking us flying today! The photos he shares from his plane always give us a different perspective of the landscape here in the Keweenaw, that we don’t often see. Neil starts us out in Copper Harbor with a look at the Lighthouse and the point UP there. It’s not iced in completely, but there’s plenty of floating ice around the land mass.
We then take off over Mt. Horace Greeley and the former Radar Base there. You can see the houses that the personnel stationed there lived in, along with the buildings that housed all the operations for the base and then later for the Keweenaw Academy, an educational facility for troubled youth. It is abandoned now and closed to the public, so seeing it through Neil’s lens is the only option nowadays.
Our last location is the Phoenix Cliffs. Neil’s shot shows the whole line of the cliffs that border the Cliff Drive from Phoenix to Ahmeek, running parallel to US41/M26. With the gray skies and the snow covered trees, the photo takes on a black and white quality.
Our video today comes from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan – Fun in the UP Facebook page and is titled Winter Wonderland. You’ll see the following sites (in no particular order): Eagle Harbor, Covered Road, Agate Beach, Calumet, Swedetown Ski Trails, Atlantic Mine and South Range. Check out their page on the link above, to see more of their work.
