Critters here UP North adapt when snow is covering the ground and their food supply. Nancy Haun captured a great example with her game camera recently. She said it’s not easy being a deer in the winter, but check out this one, stretching up to grab some of that cedar tree for dinner.
We had a gray squirrel under our birdfeeders over the weekend that was pretty crafty, too, digging down into the deep powder snow to find sunflower seeds that had been dropped earlier. There were times we couldn’t see him at all and times we could only see his tail. It was fun to watch him going in and out of the snow like that.
A little over a month ago, Jason Asselin stopped on M-95, in Marquette County, videoing a moose and her youngster. He figured they were going to cross the road, until a school bus stopped so the kids could get a look at the pair. Kudos to that bus driver, it was probably the first time a number of those kids ever saw a moose.
