When the majority of folks talk about going for a ride to check out the fall colors, they’re talking about getting in the car or maybe hoping on a bike if the weather is right, but not, E. Neil Harri. He hops in his plane for color tours around the Keweenaw. He was out flying last week and snapped photos as he flew over Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor and the top of Brockway Mountain. There was still some color that day, but you can see that it was at the tail end of the color season here UP North. It’s been pretty windy and rainy since then, so I’m guessing most of the leave are now on the ground.

Our video today is from Steven Baumann who uploaded this trip to look at Keweenaw / Brockway Mountain around mid October, when the colors were still pretty nice. Enjoy!

Neil is so lucky, though no way would I do what
he does. Those small planes scare me. But
thanks for doing what you do, Neil, cuz your
pictures are always beautiful.

And that video is positively Superior!

Greetings:

In the Brockway Mountain photo it appears that there are a lot of dead pine trees in the lower center of the photo.

Are the dead trees the result of the pine bark beetle or did they have the misfortune to grow in a swamp when the water table was lower?

Either option is a bad direction.

JT,

I'm pretty sure those are not evergreen but instead are deciduous trees that have already lost their leaves. There are a few scattered/single pine trees on the slopes of the Garden Brook River valley but the dense areas of pines are in the bottom of the valley. Those trees you've pointed out are still quite high on the valley slope. You can see the dense pines in the extreme lower right hand corner of the photo.

BTW, did we, here in Northern Illinois, get to the first measurable snowfall before the Copper Country? We got 2 inches last night and it's still cold enough that the shady areas have not yet melted; while the Keweenaw County Road Commission have not posted any measurable white stuff yet.

True or are they running behind?

love the pictures Neil took, the video was a little bit to 'jumpy' for me. It would have been nice to stay in a spot, for just a little bit longer, to enjoy the colors.
