Dawn Gunnari was at Great Sand Bay a little over a week ago and snapped these shots of the ice conditions along the shoreline there. You can see open water off in the distance on the second photo, so that’s a promising sight. I’m guessing that the conditions have changedxx a bit since these were snapped, but it’s neat to see how the ice changes the look of the landscape and waterfront along the Lake Superior shoreline. It looks mountainous and alien at the same time.
We’re doing a flyover of the ice accumulations on a windless, 40° day back in 2017, with Jacob Markiewicz. There are places in the video that you can see the slight winds, softly rippling Lake Superior’s surface. The Big Lake is not that often this calm and serene, so it’s a special stillness to behold.
