While the use of Asbestos was dramatically curtailed beginning in the early 1970's, it's still in use sparingly, primarily in industrial and commercial applications but also in some roofing and flooring materials. More importantly, most of the Asbestos used in occupied spaces prior to 1973 is still there. If it's not damaged or disturbed it's considered safe "enough".
