Mandy Cadwell and friends often go out on snowshoe adventures and a popular one that they enjoy is trekking out to the Redridge area along Lake Superior’s shoreline near Freda to check out the icy walls that form on the sandstone cliffs there each winter. The massive walls of ice are mind-boggling and absolutely stunning. You can see from these photos how big they are compared to the adventurers standing there next to them. And check out the colors in the ice, mother nature sure knows how to create beautiful winter scenes.

We join MI Playground as they take on their First-Ever Ice Climbing adventure with the Michigan Ice Fest in Munising, MI recently. Munising and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are known for world class ice climbing and they host Michigan Ice Fest each winter.

Just an FYI... The DNR is reporting that they suspect bird flu in recent Lower Michigan waterfowl die-offs. About 300 dead wild birds have been discovered in five Lower Michigan counties. You can read more about it and what to do if you find dead wild birds, here: DNR News Bulletin. This report is in Lower Michigan, but it’s a good time to remind everyone that if you come upon dead birds and you have to remove them, wear gloves and other personal protective equipment. If you can, leave the dead wild birds where they are and let them naturally decompose. As the animal decomposes, the virus will die.

Very cool adventure. I find them
to be so brave to go anywhere near
that ice. Beautiful pictures!

Mammothcicle pix! You wouldn’t catch
me standing underneath one of those
huge dangling spears.
And a nice video too! A very cool way
to enjoy the winter.
Many thanks to all of the contributors!
And as you may know, the bird-flu has
effected the cost of eggs too.
(Or is it “affected”? I feel asleep in class
that day….again.)

Hi
Both the snowshoe trek and the ice climbing look
like great adventures. I'd try the snowshoeing
(actually, that would spread your weight in case of
thinnish ice) but not the ice climbing.

Alex, I had to look it up, but affect (influence) is
the right word. An effect (result) of the high price
of eggs is that instead of making French toast for
breakfast I had English muffins last Saturday.
