If the temperature here in the Keweenaw lately hasn’t chilled you to the bone, then check out Joy Ziemnick’s first photo here today. I shiver just looking at that thick ice on Superior’s shoreline. That’s pretty much the definition of the cold of winter, in my humble opinion. With the moon peeking out from the snow laden sky and the icicles frozen in place from the wave action of Lake Superior in sub zero temperatures, it looks like a scene from Antarctica. Pretty spectacular!
Then Joy snapped a couple shots of the February full moon last week, called the Snow Moon. The Old Farmer’s Almanac has this to say about the name...more snow commonly falls during the month of February, than any other month in the winter and according to the National Weather Service, it’s the snowiest month, so it just makes sense the full moon in February is the Snow Moon.
If you haven’t ever heard of or seen “Hair Ice”, you’re not alone, because it’s somewhat rare. The intro to the video says: “If you're lucky, you may have spotted "hair ice" out in the wild. Early records of the phenomenon, also known as angel hair, date back over a century. As science and climate specialist Darius Mahdavi explains, only in recent years have scientists solved the mystery of how the delicate strands of ice form.” Pay attention to where it is on the globe map in the video, the U.P. is included in the 45 to 55 degrees latitude area where it is reliably found. How about that?

These are all so great! I love
moon pictures! And that ice!! Holy
smokes! Thanks for braving the
elements, Joy. I love the
beautiful winter scenes, and the
beautiful day, fluffy snowflakes.
But I'm not much for being out
there if the temp dips below
20ish. And we've had a lot of that
this year.

N-Ice set. Has anyone ever run across
Hair Ice? I saw something similar to that
when I looked in the mirror to shave one
cold morning and that was at the 42nd parallel.
