Stacey Flood was out on her Hok skis in the Eagle Harbor area recently and captured some icy beauty to share. That first shot is definitely “thin ice” and covered in cracks, giving it a somewhat mosaic look. Quite pretty! Then the next two photos resemble some kind of ice sculptures, perhaps an icy jelly fish or maybe the cap of a mushroom. Interesting how the icicles all formed just about the same on the rocks in both shots, cool looking dripsicles!

If you’re wondering why the size of these photos is a bit smaller, height-wise, it’s something that has been going on with the advent of the latest round of new phones taking widescreen photos. It has to do with the aspect ratio setting on the camera. Then when we size them to fit on the page here, much of the photo gets cut off if we size them to our usual size, so to keep the page from spreading too wide, we keep the width the same, which reduces the height quite a bit, but then you get to see the entire photo, just smaller than we’re used to.

Visit Keweenaw shares a new Crossing Place video about the Dee Stadium and the history of the sport of hockey here in the Copper Country. The lead-in to the video says it best: “In a place where winter reigns superior, the call to play and sport on the ice is a natural force woven into the fabric of the Keweenaw. At The Dee Stadium in Houghton, Michigan, this love of setting skate to ice is not just a winter's pastime, but a part of the very history of the Copper Country and the sport of hockey! The sport of hockey swept the Copper Country in the late 1800s, and clever entrepreneurs realized the voracious appetite residents had for the exciting sport, and thus professional hockey was born where the Dee Stadium now stands. Manager "Jet" Lucchesi shares how the Dee provides valuable ice time and historical community connection to hockey teams and skaters alike!”

if you added food coloring!!

LOVE the vid...Houghton is the birthplace of
Professional Hockey! Canada will gladly fight for
that title!

When young (waaaaay back when) and we'd go skating
in town...I was the Zamboni. I did good too. lol

How's everyone's New Year's Resolutions coming??

Mine is great, since decades ago, when I made a
resolution to quit making resolutions! lol

Today is Houseplant Appreciation Day!

Hi
Donna, like you I don't make New Year's resolutions,
but not because I don't have flaws. When we were
building our vacation cabin, I noticed my dad was
doing something slightly different with the wiring
in the kitchen. When I asked, he informed me it was
a fault interrupter. That's what I've wanted ever
since---some circuit that would stop me before I
goofed up. ;>)

Nature makes such wonderful and unique art.

It then takes a skilled photographer to capture it.

I'm with you on that one Kathryn!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, January 10, 2025 - 10:33 pm:

I'm with Kathryn also.
