Another adventure from Donna MacIntosh and her friend Cindy (HI LOU!). This time they toured Lake Linden, looking at folks Halloween decorations and Donna had to snap pictures of this home, all decked out with goblins, ghosts, pumpkins, spiders, giant dragons and a skeletal dinosaur. My goodness, I can only imagine what they all look like at night lit up. I may have to take a ride one of these evenings and check it out. My dinosaur loving grandson would love seeing this display. How fun that these folks make their place so festive for everyone to enjoy and maybe even frighten a few!
Speaking of frightening... today’s video from My UP Now tells the story of a couple that was hiking and camping at Isle Royale, hoping to spot a moose. They finally did on their last day there, but it was almost too close for comfort

D.A. you can vote every day. I just did and they're still #3.
I love these decorations. I think I've seen them, but I'm not sure because quite a few places are all decked out. Funny, I've never thought of taking pictures of somebody's decorations like that. Nice job, Donna.
The video was cool. That must have been so exciting, and yet scary all at the same time. When I went to Yellowstone, a moose got a little too close for comfort. I have a healthy respect for them just like I do for Lake Superior.

Vote cast. Nice display of dragons. All it needs is a blowup Sean Connery.

I LOVE dragons....I'd have gotten out and hugged them all, but not an option. Lake Linden got it right....they really have amazing decorations in town.
Aren't those shelters on the Island really bare bones? Just screen on the front? If it's rut season, they are so lucky something made that thing turn around....they are huge, majestic animals. yeah, that'd be one to never forget.
I assumed the fairly recent popularity of dragons comes from TV shows like "Games of Thrones".
Some 48 years ago I was staying at that same campground, Washington Creek, sleeping in one of the few shelters when it was "attacked" by a bull moose. They are quite sturdy, 3 sided structures Donna, but yes, just screens in front.
It was late fall so I'm sure the rut had something to do with it. The splashing in the creek woke me up, then as he came up a 6 foot creek bank I thought it was the Marines hitting the beach. He then started beating his antlers repeatedly against the shelter. After hearing a "swoosh" sound it was over. When I woke up in the morning I found a small tree, maybe 7 feet tall, completely stripped of all it's branches. He must have hooked his antlers near the ground and then raised his head.
Isle Royale is definitely a very special place.

WOW....What a cool story...I wonder what the shelter does that sets them off?
Did you see the limbs near the tree? He might have eaten them....
By D. A. (Midwested) on Sunday, October 27, 2024 - 03:51 pm:
The tree was not eaten, everything was pulled in an upward direction, probably just an accident of circumstances. It does though demonstrate their power.
Maybe it's all the scents and smells, left by the variety of human occupants. Moose have terrible eyesight, but make up for it with great hearing and sense of smell.
A park ranger once told me a "verified" story of a bull moose trapping someone in an outhouse for a over an hour.

D. A., at least that person had a place to go instead of peeing their pants.

Pretty much all wild critters can't see well...but they can smell, AMAZINGLY WELL...and you can watch ears moving to hone in on sounds. Critters are very incredible...
I hope the outhouse wasn't in the sun on a hot day.
