Since H Donn de Yampert retired, he’s been keeping busy taking road trips with his camera and drone equipment, snapping photos all around the U.P. and more. Today he takes us to downtown Wakefield for a closer look at the Chippewa Indian head, Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow, which translates to “Leading Man” in Chippewa. The statue was carved from a single piece of pine by Peter Wolf Toth, in 1988 and is one of 74 sculptures he has carved in his “Trail of the Whispering Giants” collection. There is at least one in every state. Wouldn’t that be a fun adventure to try to find all 74 of them all around the country?
In case your like me and have never toured the town of Wakefield (I’ve only been there for football or basketball games, but never explored the town), we have a video from earlier this year of a walking tour with Yooper Al, including a look at Nee-Gaw-Nee-Gaw-Bow.
If you’re looking for something to do this coming Saturday, September 21st, head to Houghton for the Parade of Nations. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and then the Food Festival at the Dee is at 12 noon. The theme is “Holidays from Around the World”. Fun pictures! I've got all of these pictures. It's a must stop when we traveled UP from Minnesota. But neither have I toured the town. We were always in too big of a hurry to get UP here.
Thanks for sharing these with us.

Had to look up Peter Wolf Toth and found he is a Hungarian-born American sculptor. Also, that several of his sculptures have been destroyed! We have spent a couple days in Wakefield, but it has been a while!
