We join UP with Andrea Guerriero from DRE Designs – Great Lakes Marine Products at Sault Ste. Marie for a look at several of the freighters on the St. Mary’s River getting ready to lock through the Soo Locks.

First on the list is the Arthur M. Anderson. After they locked through, they were on their way out to Lake Superior and then on to Two Harbors to load ore.

Next UP is the Algoma Sault. Andrea zoomed downtown to catch this one, saying, “How could I not, when she’s in her namesake city!” I like the color scheme on this boat. The blue really makes it stand out.

Photo #3 and #4 are the James R. Barker looking fabulous from above and at the water level. There’s lots going on in the overhead shot, on the shoreline you can see the Museum Ship Valley Camp on the far left, the Tower of History and off in the distance the MacArthur Lock, next to the shore and the Poe Lock which was where the Barker was headed. Next to the Poe Lock you get a look at the New Lock project with the work happening there.

The bottom photo is the Federal Columbia from the FedNav fleet, passing by Mission Point and Rotary Park. They were on their way to Montreal. Andrea said that they sometimes see certain Federal ships at Sault Ste. Marie more than once throughout the season and sometimes they don’t, so we’ll have to see if these guys return or not.

In case the Federal Columbia doesn’t return, Andrea shares a video she recorded from Rotary Park as it was headed downbound on her way to Montreal, with what Andrea assumed is grain.

I've been following these on my
ships page. I just love
freighters. Great pictures!

Mammoth set of some Behemoth Stogies.
Nice video too staring Mason; future sailor
and possible Pasty-Camist.

Hi
Thanks for the ship pictures & video. Just the other
day I wore my "I'd Rather be Up North" t-shirt. I'll
have to get up there soon.

"As great freighters go, she was bigger than most".
The ol Anderson, still looks pretty good.

UC, the Paul Tregurtha is huge.
We've seen it many times and are
always amazed at the size of that
freighter. It never gets old
watching them.

Deb,I was referring to the Fitz with the quote.
Special appreciation for the Anderson, being
similar age as the Fitz.
But yes, the big one's are 1000' with typically
15' to get through the lock's side to side.
American Spirit is my favorite, I use to see it
all the time in the Soo when I was calling on War
Memorial Hospital.

I see the Lee & Paul Tregurtha coming thru Detroit
all the time, Lee being the little one and of
course Paul being the 1000'.

Good Stuff!!

UC, I did recognize the reference
to the Fitz. She was huge. The
Tregurtha is huge too.
