I don’t recall if I have mentioned that H Donn de Yampert recently retired from his full time job (Congratulations, Donn!) and is now free to explore and take photos all over the U.P. to share with folks like us. We follow him to the Whitefish Point Lighthouse near Paradise for a look around the grounds there.

The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial on the grounds really caught my eye. The sculpture is titled, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and was created by Timothy Schmalz of Kitchener, Ontario. The large bronze maple leaf has a depiction of the Edmund battling the waves and winds. Just below the ship and waves are 29 small bells, symbolizing the 29 men who died 15 miles northwest of there on Nov. 10, 1975.

The bottom photo tells the story of the Graveyard of the Great Lakes. It begins with the following: “Whitefish Point has been called the Graveyard of Lake Superior. Since navigation began on Lake Superior there has been approximately 550 wrecks. More vessels have been lost in the Whitefish Point area than any other part of Lake Superior.” If you’d like to read the rest of the signage, you can do so on this link: Graveyard of the Great Lakes

Speaking of things lost, Chuck and Poppins, The Restless Viking are taking us to the tri-state border where Michigan, Indiana and Ohio come together. The lost border that Michigan and Indiana are trying to resurvey. Interesting story there.

I love visiting Whitefish Point!
There's so much to see. Nice
pictures.

Outstanding photos! Excellent Memorial.

I LOVE the Restless Vikings...you always, always
learn something!

I missed yesterday’s pix due to a hospital
procedure which turned out well.
And I have to agree that yesterday’s third
pic was amazing…what a sight to behold.
Today’s set is a nice reminder of a tragic event.
And as always, I love those UP blue skies…
can’t beat’em!

Hi
I remember reading about shipwrecks in the museum at
Whitefish Point. If memory serves a number of the
wrecks were due to collisions.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Thursday, May 16, 2024 - 02:24 pm:

Hi again
After I followed the link, I found that collisions
were indeed a problem. Hard to think of Whitefish
Bay being like a SE Michigan freeway at rush
hour....

Whitefish Point, an excellent place to visit!

Great place and great pics. Alex, you're right about
those blue skies. The bluest in the Yoop, eh!! :=))
