Baby it’s cold outside! Cold enough for some snowflakes to fall and begin small accumulations on the rocky beach sand of Lake Superior. Beth Jukuri takes us along on a bitterly cold day last week, to an empty beach on the shores of the Big Lake. I especially like the second photo...just look at those two rocks frozen together with a layer of sand frozen on top of them. There’s even a bit of an icicle on the underside of the smaller rock, which is quite neat. The third photo has an interesting sand formation that was left from wave action and has now frozen in place. Kind of looks like an alien critter.

To prove how cold it was for Beth this day, just look at her last two photos. When ice is forming like that, you know it’s quite cold, but Beth said she was dressed for the cold temps, so it wasn’t so bad. That’s the key here UP North, if you’re going out in the weather, you just need to dress for the cold this time of year and you’ll be able to enjoy the adventure.

We’re going to check out In the Keweenaw’s 2023 Year in Review. Just over a minute of video highlights captured in 2023. I think you’ll enjoy seeing all the scenes around the Keweenaw. I know I sure did!

Nice pix! I see mushrooms in the second pic
and a mysterious map in the third pic.
The last two pix look just plain n-n-n-ice.
And the video went by the same way
that 2023 did…in the blink of an eye.

Yes, nice pics and nice, short, little sun, recap of
2023.
The little showing of the Sun in the winter is
horrible and depressing, at least down state.

Hi Uncle Chuck, I walk for fitness but decent scenery helps me keep at it. Lately, I've walked in brown, beige & gray landscapes under gray skies. I agree this is uninspiring. We now have a bit of snow cover downstate, which brightens things up a little.

Great pictures! Nice to see beach
at this time of year, unless you
ride snowmobiles. The moon over
the bridge grabbed me in the
video. And yup, went by just like
that.

way cool...

I received an email from Capt. Paul letting us know that his book: Michigan Rocks!: A Guide to Geologic Sites in the Great Lakes State, has been chosen as a 2024 Michigan Notable Books. Congratulations, Paul, that's quite an honor. If you'd like to see all the books that made the list with Capt. Paul's book, click here: 2024 Michigan Notable Books

I always knew Capt. was bound for greatness,
he gots college.

Congrats, Paul! Ron's really
enjoyed your book.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 - 10:11 pm:

Thanks!
I have to come to Lansing in April to receive the award.

Is it Mother Nature's paint brush or canvas?
Excellent shots Deb!

I especially like the 2nd one with the levitating rock, held up by frozen sand or or the stalagmite of ice? Maybe a bit of both?

Alex,
I saw not a map but a rabbit's head attached to something? Kinda the shape of a famous logo that used a rabbit's head?

That does look like a spider, Mary.

Capt.,
Belated congratulations, as I got here a bit late tonight. Looks like now I really need to buy your book before they're sold out of the price starts going up in April. It will be here Saturday, but with that title how will you ever do a YouTube version of it without the help of our rock tumbling friend Rob?

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, January 11, 2024 - 04:11 am:

Whoops,

Excellent shots Beth.

Darn auto correct!
