Jeff Dennis and family took a road trip so their daughter could get in some driving hours needed to get her drivers license, so Kitch-iti-kipi – Big Spring was chosen as their destination. It’s one of my favorite places to visit in the U.P. at Palms Book State Park near Manistique. According to the DNR link in the beginning of my notes here, “This natural attraction is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring with more than 10,000 gallons of water per minute gushing through fissures in the underlying limestone, at a constant 45 degrees Fahrenheit. By means of a self-guided (accessible) observation raft, visitors can view this crystal-clear pool with an emerald green bottom”.
Jeff’s photos show the raft, the crystal clear pool and the emerald green bottom (although it looks blue in the photos, it is indeed green when viewed with the naked eye). In the video Jeff recorded, you can actually see the sand moving at the fissures where the water is gushing into the spring below, while the fish swim around, too.
Another adventure with Fritz and from the bottom photo, I’d say Fritz was wishing he could make a side adventure of chasing that squirrel he spotted. A dog can dream, can’t he?

Love it! This was always an annual stop when we came UP for vacation. Back then someone had to manually pull the raft across and back again. I remember my dad was always the first to pull the raft across then someone would pull up back. Thanks for the memories.
