We start off today’s deer photos with three from Barbara Bouwkamp that she spotted in her travels. This guy is “in the velvet”. Nice that he stuck around for some good photos. I wondered how long the antlers stay in the velvet and found this info on the Internet: In late August or early September, growth is completed and blood ceases to flow to the antlers. This process then initiates drying of the velvet, which is then sloughed or rubbed off, resulting in polished hard antlers during the breeding season. The velvet shedding occurs rapidly, usually in less than 24 hours. So interesting!
The bottom three photos were snapped by Deb Simons in their Lake Linden backyard. They had to take their bird feeders down due to a nuisance bear in the neighborhood, but this Doe and her two Fawns are still coming to visit, looking for some lunch. They all look pretty healthy, albeit Mom looks a bit thin from feeding two fawns. What a treat to have them close enough to get good pictures and not only pictures, but a fun video Deb recorded where a bunny comes to visit and the fawns are skiddish and a bit scared of that furry little critter. Too funny!
