Donna MacIntosh lives over in Houghton and she told me that when she uses the treadmill at the apartment complex she lives, she can see several beautiful homes across the canal, not far from the Quincy Mine Hoist. So when her good friend Cindy took her out for a drive recently, they went looking for those homes. They found them on Kowsit Lats Road, which is just below Quincy Mine. You can see from Donna’s photos that the view is unbelievable from UP there and she said the road is a dead end. She especially liked the old building in the third photo and figured it was probably someone’s sauna at one time.
Here’s a little background on the road and how it was named. Back in the mining days, this area was used to graze cattle. With a number of cattle there, that meant there was a good amount of ‘cowpies’ and they give off a smelly odor. According to legend, the Finns had a hard time pronouncing “SH” and “FL” sounds, so the result was Kowsit Lats and that name stuck unofficially as the name of the road. In the 1980’s, local resident Wilbert Salmi constructed his own sign, but about 20 years ago it became the official name for the road and was given its official street sign then, too. What a fun story!
As long as we’re talking about photos from Donna MacIntosh today, I’d like to publicly thank her for the many video links she finds and emails to me. That’s a huge help for me, having these video links as choices for our daily video. (Hi Lou!)
Today’s video is one that Donna sent me... it’s from the Restless Viking, Chuck, the Viking and Martha “Poppins” as they explore the Keweenaw and visit some of the less visited places. Though they stop by a couple of popular spots, they find the lesser known perspective. It’s just over 15 minutes, so settle in for the adventure.

Gorgeous pictures! Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a few less trees so the bridge could be seen? Anyway, my hubby and I cracked up after reading that road's name. And the houses are very cool too. Happy you got out, Donna.

Also, the trees blocking the view of the scenic pull-off on US-41 make the scenic overlook almost useless. But that's another story as I think it's those beautiful home's home owners that appear to not want to trim some of their trees.

Thanks for the clickable. People have tried to teach me...I just don't get it.
I also don't believe the folks living in Kowsits own the pull off area, I think others are in charge of that area? Perhaps the City of Hancock, or is it a State owned thing and the State needs to get up here and deal with it? I so agree...that needs attention really bad....

Thanks Donna for the great pictures AND Mary, for the story about the road name. Safe to say if the name had been pronounceable it would never have become official.
Safe travels Capt Paul!
