If you’re looking for an exciting adventure to see cliffs covered in ice, you need go no further than the Redridge/Freda area, outside of Houghton. That’s just what Deborah Goodell and friends did this past weekend. Between Redridge and Freda are about a mile of icy cliffs that tower over the average person, as you can see in Deborah’s first photo. That’s her friend Mandy standing at the base of that icy cliff. And just look at the colors of the ice, nature sure creates beautiful scenery all around us. I’m not certain what the source is of the water that seeps out of and down around these cliffs to freeze in such amazing sheets of ice. It would be interesting to know where it comes from and if it also seeps and runs over the sandstone cliffs there all summer long, too.
We have a short ice climbing video to get a better look at the cliffs and the extent of the icy Lake Superior shoreline out that way between Redridge and Freda. It looks like it would be a bit of a walk to get to the cliffs in this video.

Probably the water flowing through the red sandstones picking up iron ions that give it that colour.

Nice pics & video.... however, Ice Climbing.... hmmmm, what could go wrong? :=))
Power went out early Wednesday evening and came back about 3:10 PM this afternoon. Made for some really interesting sleeping and staying warm, no generator and electric well, no water. But all good now, felt like we were winter camping lol.
