Laurie Bashaw and her hubby, Ed, took a day trip to the southern side of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to check out Fayette Historic State Park on the shores of Big Bay de Noc, on Lake Michigan between Snail Shell Harbor and Sand Bay. Laurie said she loves going there, because one of her ancestors was born there. His father was a machinist. How interesting!

Located at the tip of the Garden Peninsula, the townsite was once a bustling industrial community that manufactured charcoal pig iron for 24 years between 1867 and 1891. The well-preserved buildings have been standing for 150 years and hold much history about life during the 19th century. In the summer months there are self-guided tour options available. Winter months like now, the park is open, but only for snowshoeing, skiing and the like. The buildings and visitor center are open from May 13th to October 23rd.

We once again join Nick and Andy from MI Playground for a video tour around the winter grounds at Fayette. Both guys were quite excited to find such a large “stash” of blue ice right here in the U.P.

Fayette is a cool place to visit especially in the summer. The drive

down to the bottom of the peninsula is really nice too…especially

on a motorcycle.

Laurie and Ed are very busy people, always
investigating. I love Fayette in the summer,
but not much for wandering around in the
winter. So nice we have all of these
pastycammers to do it for us. Thanks to all
of you for sharing these great photos and
videos.

Fayette Historic State Park is great.

More so than almost all other similar places in the U.P. it really makes you feel like you've entered a 19th century ghost town. Or maybe it was because I was there during Halloween?

Fayette is one of the feature stops in my book that is finally coming out very soon...

Capt. Paul: Be sure to let us know when it is released.
