Greg DuMonthier grew up in the Copper Country and was recently back in the area for a visit over the 4th of July weekend. He toured around Calumet one of the days and captured a few shots, including a neat look down Sixth Street, where he stopped to snap a photo of the famous Calumet Theatre and one of Shute’s Saloon next door, which is much the same inside historically, as it was back in the day. There really is so much history in these old buildings and establishments, they are treasures of the area.

Thom Petersen took an old photograph of Calumet from the late 1800’s and made a video zooming in on areas of the photo like an aerial tour of the town back then. Check out the cow walking the street...Thom zooms in on it around 2:28 in the video. If you can view the video full screen, you’ll get a much better look at Calumet in the late 1800’s.

That video was so cool. I totally enjoyed
it.

We were driving through 6th street yesterday
on our way out to Bucky's. Calumet is so
cool.

While I'm up there, I'm going to try something interesting this year. I'm going for a walk through some of the towns shooting B&W photos to see if I can capture some of the historical feeling in the modern day. I did this once before (I believe Mary even featured some on a Cam Notes once), but I want another crack at it.

Awesome!

REAL GARDENS WITH REAL FOOD. Not that cardboard
stuff from the store. Outhouses...ugh. Horsedrawn
carriage. That was a cool video!

That's a great idea Capt. Paul! Have you ever tried to capture a shot from the same angle/location as a historical shot to show how it has changed?

I am having doubts this is actually Calumet. The distant geography is not correct as the far away and mid-distance hills do not seem correct. Plus the churches visible do not match anything standing today.

Here is a link to the photograph on Shorpy.com. You can read the comments from others by scrolling down from the photograph. A comment titled "Ghost Image", talks about several streets and where they are on a current map with links to maps he refers too. Maybe this will help... Shorpy.com

D.A., I thought the same about the churches.
And I was looking for them. But maybe they
got moved? Idk.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Monday, July 11, 2022 - 02:40 pm:

Thank you Mary. It's very difficult to argue with the explanations and similarities found by sbuttgereit at the Shorpy website. Based on the amount of electrification (power poles) I knew this was not the late 19th century (that the Youtube maker stated) but rather early 20th century. Also, earlier photography technology long shutter times (people would be blurred due to moving).

I can see the body of water to the upper right is Calumet Lake.

What's amazing are the things in the picture that no longer exist. Of course the population of Calumet/Red Jacket was much greater back then but I count 4 brick churches with tall SINGLE steeples. One of them must be the old St. Paul's before it was rebuilt in 1908 with its two steeples. There's a huge bridge now missing, a large elevated train trellis, the aforementioned brick churches, plus all the houses and mining related buildings.
