The American Queen Voyage’s Ocean Navigator cruise ship was in Houghton this past week, the first of two visits this summer and we have a plethora of photos of her arrival. We start with three photos snapped by Jeff Dennis who said he got up at 4:00 a.m. for the drive out to White City to capture shots of the Navigator’s arrival at the Portage Lower Entry. The ship all lit up is quite a sight. Jeff’s third shot is just as she was sailing under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. This is a 16 day round-trip cruise which departed from Chicago and included stops in Marquette, Duluth, Green Bay, Holland, Thunder Bay. The 286 ft. Ocean Navigator was built in 2001, but was recently refurbished in 2019. The ship can carry up to 202 passengers, plus a crew of up to 84.
The next two photos were snapped by Angie Hebert, as the Navigator came out from under the bridge and then a great side view of her as she was preparing to dock on the Houghton waterfront. From there the passengers aboard were able to disembark and explore the town with excursions to the Quincy Mine Hoist and the Seaman Mineral Museum that had been organized by the cruise line.
The last three photos here today, are screenshots captured from the Michigan Tech Webcams as the Ocean Navigator sailed down the Portage Canal toward the Lift Bridge.
The video of the Cruise Ship sailing under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge comes from Jeff Dennis. He sure was a busy photographer/videographer that morning, driving around 55 miles round trip to capture the photos and video.

Hi
If not for these posts, I would never think of
cruise ships in the Great Lakes. Our vacation home
near Cheboygan is on Lake Huron with shipping lanes
out in front. The next time I see something that is
not a freighter, a cruiser, or a Shepler ferry doing
a lighthouse cruise, I'll consider if it might be a
cruise ship.

These are all wonderful pictures. We were
lucky enough to be bringing my mom for a
ride and she was very excited to see this.
She said she never thought she'd see the day
that there'd be a cruise ship in Houghton.
I don't think any of us did.
Thanks for all the pictures and videos.
Great job!!
