We visited the Calumet Air Force Station with Walter Dennis and his Dad, Jeff Dennis, back in May, 2021. At that time the property was for sale on bids and was purchased by a group of Engineers, former MTU Graduates who said they hope to make it a tourism spot in the future. The Dennis family made a return visit last week, but from a distance and with their drone. NOTE: Please keep in mind that this is private property and there is asbestos on the site and lead-based paint, as well as oil spills.
Walter did a great job flying over the campus there and capturing the mood of the property in the midst of winter. The bottom photo was taken over Gratiot Lake, aiming toward the Radar base, which is right about in the center of the photo in the distance. With the purchase by the group of Engineers, there is renewed hope that something good can be done with the area, rather than see it sitting empty and slowly destroyed by vandals and deterioration.
Walter’s video flies us over the property for a wintry look. Jeff prefaced the video with the following info: The station itself was built in 1951 to monitor aerospace during the Cold War, and it sits atop Mount Horace Greeley overlooking nearby Gratiot Lake.

That'd make a great lil' suburb...it'll be so interesting to see what it's turned into. Thrilled it's been bought and not left to rot.

Nice view of Mt. Bohemia starting at 3:12.
A friend of mine had an uncle with a cabin on Gratiot Lake. We skied down to it one Winter but his key didn't work so we had to camp in our tent (lucky we brought one).
