The sunrise photos here today were taken by Frances Czapski at Whitefish Bay. I love the way she described capturing these photos, so I’m just going to share her words here below:

“When I left the house for my sunrise photo shoot this morning, I wasn't really sure what to expect. As I walked through the woods and studied the bits of sky that I could see, it seemed slightly clear above but looked like possible rain clouds to the south. The morning was choppy on Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay with a southeast wind blowing around 10 mph. There were clouds all around the perimeter of the Bay with just a slight clearing above Canada in the eastern sky. In the next 15 minutes as sunrise drew closer, the sky exploded in color. Deep pinks and oranges mixed with the moody grays of the clouds and the lake. A few drops of rain started to fall. I glanced to the south and was beyond surprised and happy to see a small rainbow. The light was incredibly rich and vibrant for a solid two minutes. But within five minutes after sunrise, the sun disappeared behind the cloud bank and a steady rain started shortly thereafter. Oh! What a morning to be awake!”

Wrapping up another week of U.P. videography, we join Dr. Nat for a Geology lesson in Ishpeming, at Jasper Knob looking at banded iron formations. Don’t worry, no quiz at the end of this class.

Oh my goodness! I honestly think that this
year has been the best year ever for both
sunrises and sunsets. I've seen so many
amazing pictures. I have a cousin in Twin
Lakes who has one or the other most every day
on her FB page. They are always spectacular.
I told her she should put a book together.

Thanks for sharing these.

Spectacular pictures, Frances! The third one with the sun peaking thru is my favorite. What fantastic color saturation!

And of course Dr. Nat's 'class' was fascinating. This is an event i've never heard of. Thank you, Dr. Nat!
