We revisit this Chassell farm with Patrick Thornton, who shared photos of the field back on August 2nd. Today we’re there for the harvesting of the rye and the prep of the straw for baling later. Patrick said that the rye is ready for harvesting when it the “heads bow”, like in the first photo. It’s quite a process, but with a big John Deere Combine, the job is easily completed in an afternoon. The rye is transferred into the hopper of the combine and the straw comes out the back in rows, ready to be baled. When the hopper is filled, then the rye is transferred into trucks for transporting for it’s final destination.
Michigan Farming shares a harvesting video, so you can see the process in action.
