I don’t think we’ve visited Mackinac Island yet this summer, so let’s join Kenny Ozanich on a recent trip he made there with his son, Tim. Kenny took some great shots of the places I love to spend time at while on the Island, starting with the marina. It’s always fun to walk up and down the docks checking out all the boats. A walk or bike ride along the main street is a must, too, with a few stops at the shops of course.
It’s always a learning experience when you tour Fort Mackinac. Taking in all the history of the Fort and it’s especially neat if you’re there when the cannon blasts. It truly brings history to life.
Arch Rock is another stop, either from the highway, M-185 or from up above looking down toward the highway. The view from UP there is great. Speaking of M-185, I bet you wouldn’t expect highway closures for construction on the Island, right? Well, think again. M-185 from Arch Rock to British Landing on the north side of the Island is closed, approximately 4 miles, so you’ll have to turn around at Arch Rock, but from the British Landing closure, you can turn up the British Landing Road and ride towards the center of the Island. They expect the construction to go on for most of the 2021 summer season as crews will be paving portions of the road that were damaged due to erosion from the high water levels.
To complete our Island tour, we’re hoping aboard a self drive carriage from Jack’s Livery Stable in the interor of Makinac Island. The lead horse is Belle and the horse on carriage doing the filming is Bill. These horses know the route so well, you hardly need to guide them at all. No experience is needed. The video ends in Harrisonvile where many of the year around Mackinac Island residents live and few tourists ever visit.

Years ago, when we were students at NMU, we went to the Island in October and rented one of the carriages. The horse knew every stop and wouldn't move on until it was ready! We got caught in a heavy snow storm and wanted to head for the barn but noooooooo, the horse still stopped at every point of interest along the way!
