Thanks to Nancy Haun, both in photos and video, we get to feel like we were there for this beautiful celebration where the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community strengthens their community bonds and continues their traditions through dance, music and song. Members of the Native American Indian Community wear colorful, traditional dress and perform dances to tribal drums and chanting. They hold traditional healing rituals and keep their history alive by acting out ancient stories that have been handed down through generations of proud Native Americans. It’s beautiful to see the youngsters involved, dressed similar to the adults and learning the traditions of their Community so they can carry on the legacy for years to come.

Nancy said it was an awesome PowWow, with tons of people, lots of vendors, good food and excellent dancers. She videoed the Grand Entry from Friday, saying it is always the highlight, with four in total over the course of the three day event. She adds, if you have never been to one, it is pretty amazing, so go if you can.

No lack of color in this set!

This is SOOOOOOOOOO gorgeous! Their "festive garb"
is called Regalia, and (I just found out) it is
given to them from either a vision or it's gifted.
They all have names, Jingle Dresses, Fancy Shawls,
Traditional, etc...and the dances have names as
well...And, if you find an Eagle's feather, either
mail it to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or you
gift it to a Native. There is such a feeling when
you get to do that. They cry. An Eagle Feather is
then treated as a member of the family. (If you
keep it and are not Native...and the Feds find
out...BIG trouble!) Tribal colors are incorporated
into the Regalia...and yeah, vendors that sell
everything from cd's to blankets to jewelry, etc.
Way cool stuff. Four grand entries, and there are
pow wows across the country. They are typically
held for a week, and there's classes, healings,
etc. Wikipedia tells you way more:
