Laurie Bashaw and her hubby made the drive out to the Crisp Point Lighthouse recently and captured some beautiful shots from up at the top of the lighthouse. Quite the vista from the walkway around the top!

If you’re unfamiliar with this light, it’s probably because it is considered one of the most inaccessible lighthouses in the Upper Peninsula. It’s easier to get to now, though, as the narrow country road through the Lake Superior State Forest has been fixed up to make it easier to get out to the point. The road is well marked and when traveling it, you think you’re never going to get there, but it’s worth the drive, especially when you round the last bend and the tall lighthouse tower comes into view. You can see from Laurie’s photos here today, that it’s a photographers delight!

The last photo is a reminder of the two sisters who were unfamiliar with the area and their GPS took them down the seasonal road in April, where they got stuck in the snow for 13 days in April, 2015. Cell phone service in the area is non-existent and the women survived on Girl Scout Cookies and Cheetos they had in the car. If I remember correctly, they also melted snow to drink, once they ran out of bottled water. They were rescued when a helicopter pilot saw a reflection off their stuck SUV. The two women returned to the spot in August that same year and even signed the post that holds the sign about their ordeal. They added that they don’t plan on visiting the UP during the winter months again.

Eldon McGraw Media shares a drone video from the Lighthouse with more views of the surrounding area.

Hi
Many lighthouses are (or were, when first in
service) in pretty inaccessible places. I think it
could be boring and lonely...or, peaceful and
beautiful, depending on your mood or your nature.
And, regardless, there could be problems with
supplies. While there is romance in the idea of a
lighthouse keeper, this is probably a good place
for automation.

Always my favorite lighthouse. Our first trips were before the road improvements, signs pointing you the way, and when the lighthouse was close to being destroyed. Even more of an adventure back then.

I can never understand the mindset of the women who would sit in their car for 13 days instead of hiking out at least to Little Lake where they could call for help. They didn't seem to be disabled in anyway.
