Last week we saw folks out skating around the Lower Harbor Ore Dock in Marquettte. This week we’re getting a rare look at the inside of this same ore dock, thanks to Laurie Bashaw, who said that they just had to get in on this historic event of being able to walk on the frozen lake and see the ore dock up close. A comment was also made that the dock is an architectural, engineering marvel and is like an iron cathedral. Great description!

906 Images had the same thought Laurie did and made a video of the “fly through” he did with his drone. Amazing what modern technology can do these days!

Some interesting trivia about this Ore Dock. The length of is 969 ft., height is 85 ft., 7 inches and it is 67 ft., 9.5 inches wide. It was built in 1931 – 1932. Jbuck, one of our regular viewers mentioned last week on the skating photos, that this lower ore dock was decommissioned on December 31, 1971, due to poor market conditions, so it’s been out of commission for almost 50 years.

These are great pictures - would love to have been there. The ore dock brings back a lot of memories. The section that connected the ore dock to the trestle ran over downtown Marquette and had a landmark sign which read:

Welcome to Marquette
home of
NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

There was a lot of controversy about removing that section with the sign and many of us were sad to see it removed about 20 years ago.

It's like an Ore Dock Cathedral.

Beautiful pics & video, great music as well...
rather majestic sight and the music fits
appropriately!!

Jbuck, I too remember the sign, it was a proud
feeling as I recall!

Now with all the development in the lower harbor,
if I had a place over looking the harbor... would
I really like looking at that big Ore Dock all
the time.... I don't think so.. I must be getting
old! lol

Man, I miss Marquette!!
